Faces of Freeheel (71)
This summer, of 2011 we started a much belated project of creating a photo album of the faces that pass through our little shop here in West Yellowstone. We thought cycle tourists would be interested in seeing the other tourists leading the way, and wanted the faces of our dearest supporters- supporting us daily, monthly, and yearly to be recognized. Please take a moment or several to browse through, find your photo, and post a comment. If you haven't already- be sure you swing through the shop to get your photo taken & posted in our album! Thank you for stopping through Freeheel and Wheel, your support and friendship makes Freeheel the sweet spot it is! -

Mile Creek to Lionhead (20)
I didn't give enough credit to Melissa and Brenda with the report of their ride up Mile Creek to the Dry Fork last week. ...those switchbacks are switchbacks that will never be forgotten. Earlier this week, Kelli, Brandy, Rachel, my good friend Paul from Seattle (originally hailing from Helena, MT), and I headed out on one of the most epic rides of my life... 100 switchbacks (up & down) ~5000 ft elevation gain 6 hours It was awesome! The weather was perfect. We rode in our tank tops until late afternoon when we started our decent from 10,000 feet. Coming off the ridge there was a bit of crusty snow left over from autumn’s first snow a few weeks ago. We began the ride at the Reynolds Pass pull out off hwy 87. The week before Melissa and Brenda had scoped out the new 4mile trail connecting the CDT west of hwy87 to the Mile Creek trail, the CDT on the east side of hwy87. They reported back with awe & said it was a must before the season ends. It was a wide and smooth single track, skirting along the hillside toward the Mile Creek drainage. The aspens were glamorous in their golden autumn colors! I could have ridden that section back & forth all day… but we had 26 more miles to go… We hauled ourselves up the Mile Creek switchbacks to the saddle where Melissa and Brenda headed southeast on the Dry Fork trail. Instead of taking the Dry Fork trail, we busted up the last handful of switchbacks and headed toward the Lionhead and Watkins Creek drainage. At the top of the ridge the elevation of 10,000ft! We had a spectacular view of the Tetons, Gallitans, and Yellowstone on the eastern horizon. Here we began our long decent through the candy cane switchbacks tracked up by mountain goats & though huge striped boulders. Hoof-less, we did some walking down those… we rode a few more switchbacks and some technical down hill on trail #215 & #217. A few more switchbacks and some technical down hill sections landed us at the last portion of our ride. We ended down forest service road 1735 to the Super 8 where we parked our shuttle vehicle before our epic adventure. The ride was sweet & we all recommend it! -
Mile Creek to the Dry Fork of Targhee Creek (27)
Melissa and Brenda headed out earlier this week... the middle of October(!) and checked out the new section of the Continental Divide Trail. The new four mile section connects the section of the CDT near the ID MT border and Reynolds pass across hwy 87 to the Mile Creek trail #214. The Mile Creek trail meets up with the junction of the Dry Fork and Targhee Creek trails. The two decided to take the Dry Fork trail (#027) instead of the Targhee Creek trail, (also #027). The new 4 mile single track is marked on the newest edition of Beartooth Publishing's Bozeman, Big Sky, Yellowstone, MT map (found in our shop). The Dry Fork trail rides quite similarly to the Targhee Creek trail, winding along the bottom edge of rocky mountain slopes with a few areas requiring bike-pushing... but not enough to get frustrated by! Stop on by & we'll fill you in on the latest! -
Mesa Falls Scenic Byway (4)
Catch the byway just 7miles past Island Park, ID and experience some of the greatest, quietest road riding about 30 minutes from Yellowstone Nat'l Park. With several paved and nearly retired forest service roads Mesa Falls Scenic Byway is a destination in and of itself for cyclists of all levels. -
Shop Ride! 2010 (16)
Freeheel's lovely bosses Melissa and Kelli took their awesome employees on a shop ride in late September. The weather was perfect, the lighting awesome, and the riding spectacular. We drove up the Taylor Fork Road (#134 West off hwy 191) and parked at the Taylor Fork trail head. From there we continued on our bikes up the dirt road past the Nine Quarter Circle Ranch and headed north on trail #223 (for those of you drooling over your map) towards Albino Lake. The ride was slightly technical but even our beginner riders loved the trail. It gets a lot of mountain biking use so it's nicely packed and the signs are helpful and got us back to our vehicles. From Albino lake we twisted around Lincoln Mountain and headed down the Meadow Creek drainage (trail #33) to our vehicles. The loop was about 6 miles. We did have to ford the Taylor Creek once at the beginning of the ride and once at the end. Not a tough way to wrap up the summer season and start thinking about our ski season! -
Cycle Tour, 2010 (20)
The 13th Annual West Yellowstone-Old Faithful Cycle Tour September 25, 2010. The West Yellowstone Old Faithful Cycle Tour is a terrific way to wind down a summer of riding and a unique way to experience Yellowstone National Park. Fall is a gorgeous time to be in Yellowstone, the elk are bugling, the aspens have turned to gold, and the thermal areas are relatively free of crowds. The supported ride is sixty miles round trip, with options available for one way travel. Cyclists in the tour can take advantage of two feed stations, three sag wagons, on-course bike mechanics, and end the day with a group meal. -
